Time management and fitting exercise into a busy lifestyle

Sometimes it's difficult to make time for fitness. Especially when you have a busy schedule that doesn't have a whole lot of wiggle room. How did you manage your time to make room for exercise? What do you change or have to compromise on? Lots of questions that many of us face! However there are some answers that may help you achieve your fitness goals, or at least give you the best possible chance to get to the gym!

Be flexible

You don't always have to go to the gym at the same time. A lot of people have their set time they go to the gym and if they miss that they just skip it and leave it to another day. Simply aim to go to the gym at some point during the day. If you miss your planned morning session due to something coming up at work then plan for a lunch workout. If you can't go at lunch because you have to go to the shops then workout a little bit later. Aim for consistency not rigidity. There are a lot of variables we can't always control that can prevent you getting to the gym, it can rain, you can be tired, you'll be hungry but as long as you are flexible with your timings you can always get a workout in.

Plan ahead

A simple but very effective method is having a gym bag ready to go whenever you need it. If you pre-pack this the night before you plan on going to the gym then you can just get up and go at any point you are able to. This isn't just limited to a gym bag however. You can prepare meals for the week to save time on cooking. If you're dropping the kids off at football spend the time they are there at the gym as you'll have less of a chance of being distracted. You can plan your daily routine out, add in some time for things you don't expect and this may lessen the need to be flexible.

Try going to a class

Rather than doing your own workout going to a class is a great way to motivate yourself to get up and go! Since you will have already planned this you can stick with what you already have planned rather than pushing your workout back an hour. Also you can involve someone you know in a class, that someone who may have been the reason you are busy! Give a different workout plan a try

If you are struggling to fit in some cardio then going for a 1 hour run on the treadmill might not be the best use of your time at the gym. You could try a more physically intensive workout, such as a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) routine that will cut your time at the gym significantly. This also works if you are weight training, if you are going 5 times a week change to a different routine.
